Shady courtyard, Chigwell
Calm. Reflective. Abundant.
This shady courtyard space forms part of a larger garden and created an opportunity for a moment of cool and calm. Tucked away behind the house, accessed via a brick arch gateway and shaded by a huge yew hedge, the space has a secret unexpected feel to it. It’s overlooked by two huge picture windows on either side of the staircase inside the house, so the key view is from above. We designed the planting to be like a tapestry carpet with the colours changing through the seasons as winter hellebores give way to spring euphorbia, followed by geraniums and astrantia and, later in the year, Japanese anemones will take up the baton and bloom right through the autumn.
